When is my work protected?
If we’re talking copyrights your work is protected the instant you reduce it to a tangible form, print it out, save it to your hard drive, or complete the painting. It’s protected instantly under copyright law. You don’t have to ask permission or anything. You can put the copyright notice on there. If you want maximum protection you would want to register it, but it is protected as soon as you create it.
